Penley Estate was established in 1988 by Kym Tolley (whose mother was a Penfolds and father, spookily, a Tolley hence the choice of name). Kym worked for Penfolds under'Grange' creator Max Shubert. Red wine making is in the blood therefore and Kym's creations are in no way shy. That said his vineyards produce some of the lowest yields in the district and the key to his wines is balance. Combining all the necessary elements is a rare skill and one which Tolley excels at. No ashes left here ... this Phoenix is a risen beauty.

Plantagent wines continue to enjoy enormous success, largely due to the purity of fruit captured by winemaker Gavin Berry. Both their Cabernet and Shiraz are consistently rated among the top 20 in Australia. That said, Aussie Shiraz can be very in your face and over-powering. This, however, is another wine from the school of elegance over brute strength and, as such, is quite sublime.
