The first river that explorer, Van Riebeeck, charted was the one that flows around the town of Stellenbosch, through the vineyards and then heads due south to empty into False Bay. Whilst our explorer did not show much imagination when it came to names, this blend from the eponymous First River Winery does show a nice amount of flair without trying to be too clever. Rooiberg Winery is a co-operative based in the Breede River Valley beneath the peaks of the Langeberg Range. There are around 35 member farms at present that are spread over four distinct regions each adding a different dimension to the range of wines. The wines are highly rated in South Africa not least in the John Platter guide and enjoy a very strong trade in the Cellar-Door sales. They are simple yet well made and individual.
